While designing decorative fabrics and wallpapers for the prestigious English stores Liberty and Sanderson, decorator Christiane Gautrot, painter Desmond Knox-Leet, and stage designer Yves Coueslant opened a boutique of unparalleled style and refined taste on Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris in 1961. Two years later, the trio agreed that the homes adorned with their magnificent fabrics and wallpapers deserved equally magnificent scents. Diving into the boundless world of fragrance, they created their first candles as well as their first perfume, L'Eau, in 1968. Given the vast landscape of the perfume industry, Diptyque quickly became one of the world's most esteemed perfume houses through a swift and dazzling debut.
